The amount of startups founded by young entrepreneurs under the age of 20 is rapidly on the rise. The latest teenage generation are the first too have grown up with the internet, and with the ease of access when it comes to starting a business online many bright entrepreneurs have emerged whilst still in their teens.

It is also more common place to see teens who have taught themselves code and are able to create innovative web apps due to the freedom they possess. As this generation have grown up along with social networks they know how to leverage these. What may start out as hobby/after school project can turn into a real business.

But how do you survive as a real business when you are just seen as a kid?

As a teenager you are left with less responsibility. No kids, mortgage etc… (Well most of the time) to look after. The risks to consider for a teenpreneur are much less in this sense.

Often a lot of the larger organizations that are more established, are seeing real competition from startups with young founders who are have grown up with a different way of thinking. As the world continues to change and the face of business changes as well, the mindset of the older organizations are different too those of the younger entrepreneurs and that is where the next generation of young entrepreneurs can gain a competitive advantage over larger corporations in older industries.

We as a younger generation take for granted much of what we see as being the norm, but in reality it is still very new. This is a new way of doing business, older generations grew up and learned a different way of business. As a younger generation comes through and spend ever increasing amounts of time online, businesses no matter what background are having to have an online presence, which may be more than just a website and actually have to offer their products & services online.

A big consideration whens starting your company whilst still very young, is how are you supposed to be taken seriously as a young entrepreneur? It can be harder when getting loans or trying to work with suppliers and partners. How about when trying to get funding? It’s obviously a lot easier when you can show that your business is making money and your model is working, but it can often take a lot of attempts to get there (also having a co founder helps). This is where the power of networking and building strong relationships can help, especially within your own industry.

Entrepreneurs these days have a greater network to learn from than before. It is so easy for anyone to get online and find networking events they can attend or just interact with others who have been through it already. Social networks are the main facilitators of this. Places like Twitter & LinkedIn have allowed young entrepreneurs to compete with the corporate world as they have been able to build strong networks with other young entrepreneurs and also gain knowledge from many others young and old.

I think that young entrepreneurs are not seen to be as much of a pushover as maybe they were previously. Many young entrepreneurs have made it in the past, just look at Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. But I think it’s only now that with the internet, that entrepreneurship has opened up for a lot of under 30′s to be able to take their ideas and go through with it. The barriers to entry are so much lower and the nature of many businesses have changed giving young entrepreneurs the advantage in many industries, except maybe manufacturing.

I think one aspect that is slowly changing is the acceptance of entrepreneurship as a viable career choice, especially when you are young and have no experience, but you have passion and an idea. Much of what we get taught in school is still a very old way of thinking. The education system can’t keep up with the way world and business is progressing and innovating.

Only now are universities offering entrepreneurship courses, but to be honest it’s not just offering a course at university. The entrepreneurial spirit is something you have inside you, it’s a way of thinking and it’s something you grow up with. What about before university, can we see that entrepreneurial spirit and let it flourish?

Starting your own business whilst still being young can be daunting, but surely it’s more daunting when you are older and potentially have more to lose. Big steps have definitely been made and with more media attention being put on the likes of Mark Zuckerberg, hopefully young entrepreneurs can make a bigger impact across many industries and not just in tech (online).

Reading, writing, arithmetic … and money management? Financial-literacy programs are popping up all over, to school kids on saving, spending and investing wisely.

But some eager young entrepreneurs don’t need professional help — they’re figuring out money matters on their own.

We found several local “biz kids” — between 8 and 18 years old — who are turning their hobbies and skills into fledgling business ventures. Some of them spend what they earn; others give most of their profits to charity.

We asked them about their money-making endeavors; to explain what they do and why, and what they’ve learned along the way. We’ve distilled their answers into mini-profiles that reveal some of the practical lessons they’ve learned on the job.

Parental influence varies. Charles Hulse, whose son Eli creates and sells his own iPhone apps, admits that he’s mostly sitting back and watching his son make his own way. “I don’t really have a lot of business experience,” he says. “I’m learning from him.”

Alec Distler

Age: 16

Hometown: Williston

School: Champlain Valley Union High School

Business venture: Distler’s: Pretzels With a Kick — he makes spicy pretzel snacks.

Alec Distler loves pretzels. He grew up eating bite-sized bits of broken-up sourdough pretzels baked with spices, as per his grandmother’s recipe. The secret ingredient? Cayenne pepper.

In his last year at Williston Central School, Alec had to complete the school’s traditional eighth- grade challenge — a kind of capstone project. He chose to pursue entrepreneurship and started his own business, baking and packaging his grandma’s spicy pretzels.

Distler says he brought an initial 50 bags of Alec’s Spicy Pretzels to CVU’s cafeteria thinking, I wonder how long it’s going to take to sell them. The next day, Alec got a call — the school wanted another 100 bags. By that Christmas, in 2008, he was selling about 900 bags per week.

Three and a half years later, Alec’s pretzels are available in local stores, including Sam Mazza’s, Burlington Bay Market & Café and Shelburne Supermarket. They are, as the packages claim, “addicting.”

A few things have changed as the company has grown. There are now five flavors — ranch, maple, spicy, x-tra spicy and fiery. And the baking and bagging processes have been outsourced.

The Distlers also recently changed the company name from Alec’s Spicy Pretzels after coming across a similar-sounding California company. The new name, Distler’s: Pretzels With a Kick, reflects the fact that the business isn’t just Alec’s enterprise — his mother and sisters help out a lot, too.

No one’s getting rich — yet. “People think, because I have a business, I have lots of money,” Alec says. Truth be told, while he draws an hourly paycheck, most of the profits are reinvested in the company, and 10 percent goes to charity.

There are some sweet perks, though. Alec gets to attend food trade shows, where he meets people from around the world. And Alec’s mom, Lynn Distler, says the family has enjoyed the together-time the pretzel-making process required — often 10 to 15 hours a week in a commercial kitchen, breaking pretzels and dancing to the radio.

ALEC’S INSIGHTS:

If your idea takes off, go with it. ”I didn’t really expect this to become the long-term thing that it has become,” says Alec, who never guessed that his school project would turn into the family business. But the Distlers have embraced the opportunity, and it’s paying off.

The business owns the business owner. Increased demand for your product is great, but if you’re the owner, you have to do more work to meet the demand. Sometimes that means spending all of your free time breaking apart sourdough pretzels.

It can’t just be about the money. ”It takes a couple of years to start making money,” Alec advises. “You’ve got to do something that you like to do.”

Alex Morris and Isabelle Mittelstadt

Alex Morris

Ages: Both are 10

Hometowns: Shelburne and Charlotte, respectively

Schools: Shelburne Community School and Charlotte Central School

Business venture: Hold Your Horses — they make headbands and hair ties.

When they were in kindergarten, Alex and Isabelle — and their respective moms — came up with a craft project to make a little extra cash. They started making hair ties, bows and bands for family and friends. Positive reactions led to table sales at craft fairs and relationships with local stores. Their product proved so popular that the moms, Deborah Morris and Alexis Mittelstadt, made a grown-up business out of it.

Named Alex & Isabelle after their daughters, the mom-led company makes hair ties that are more complex than the ones they created with their girls. Customers buy them on the web and at stores such Isabean, Ecco and Mirror Mirror.

Meanwhile, the girls have been doing their own thing, and selling the products at local events. Dubbed Hold Your Horses, their company uses the tagline “ponytails with a purpose” — a reminder that the two girls give a large portion of their profits to charity.

The moms felt strongly about the donation requirement, which at first was hard for Alex and Isabelle to accept. But the girls have gotten into it, says Alexis Mittelstadt. For example, they donated to Spring Hill Horse Rescue in Clarendon after getting a letter about an influx of new horses there with special needs. And when the Connor B. Turnbaugh Foundation put out a call to help families of children with cancer, the girls dyed a batch of hair ties and set up a sale.

They don’t give away all of their profits, though. Isabelle is a saver and has been socking most of her earnings away. Alex is getting better about putting money away, too.

They’ve both used Hold Your Horses as an opportunity to polish their math skills. Deborah Morris says the girls have grown independent enough that she can sit back and read a book during a sale.

How long will they continue in business? Alex says she hopes to have a day job someday. “When I’m older, I want to work with horses,” she says. “For now, this is a great job.”

ALEX’S INSIGHTS:

Don’t forget the three Ls: location, location, location. It’s best to set up shop in a high-traffic area. The Shelburne Supermarket is a hot spot, says Alex.

Communicating with customers is key. ”It is scary to talk to somebody,” says Alex, “but you kind of have to do it.”

The soft sell works. Alex says being aggressive is not her style. She prefers to wait until people seem interested, then explain her products.

Giveaways = free advertising. The girls give some of their hair ties away, hoping to spur sales. Alex notes that one of her friends “helps advertise because she wears them a lot.”

Nora Jacobsen

Age: 8

Hometown: Burlington

School: Champlain Elementary School

Business venture: She sells handmade items.

Some kids need a little encouragement to sell cookies or popcorn during school fundraisers. Not Nora Jacobsen. The outgoing 8-year-old is unafraid to knock on doors and has already mastered “the ask.”

Nora makes bookmarks and finger-knitted scarves that she sells to nearby neighbors. She also does household chores, such as folding laundry for pay, and has organized classmates into fundraising collaboratives. Last year she brought together a group of schoolmates for monthly meetings and tasked them with fundraising duties that she thought would appeal to them — artfully decorating mailing envelopes, for instance.

Nora gives most of her own hard-earned money away, mainly to environmental organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund. “I feel like there are people that need it more than I do,” she says. “To tell you the truth, I never really buy anything.” She adds, “I know I’m going to be a saver. I can buy a house with it when I grow up.”

Her mom, Kitty Bartlett, is the annual giving coordinator for the Lund Family Center. Kitty admits that dinner table talk might have influenced Nora’s philanthropy. But Kitty, a self-described spendthrift, can’t take credit for Nora’s miserly tendencies. Her mom recalls a time when Nora spent $5 on a wind-up butterfly — only to decide she wanted to return it and get that exact $5 billback into her pocket.

“I love her buyer’s remorse,” Kitty says.

NORA’S INSIGHTS:

Don’t be shy. ”I’m not exactly shy, but I can be sometimes,” Nora says. “I’ve learned not to be.”

Expect that your customers will want to buy. Nora believes in her causes and assumes that people she approaches will see the value in her products and her goal. She simply expects that they’ll want to buy. “It works,” quips Kitty.

Cash is king. Nora prefers to donate cash, rather than products, to her charities of choice. “I think that with some money, you can pretty much do what you need,” she says. “If you give people canned food…what can they do?”

Greg Potter

Age: 18

Hometown: Richmond

School: Mount Mansfield Union High School

Business venture: He develops animated graphics and web videos as a freelancer and is a part-time web developer at Dealer.com.

When Greg Potter was in third grade, he wanted to lend his books to his friends and keep track of who borrowed them. So he wrote a software program that managed his lending library.

Since then, he’s taken on projects such as creating school websites, fixing computers, and selling visual effects templates for animated graphics. He currently sells his code segments and web video work to clients through sites such as AudioJungle and VideoHive.

A year ago, Greg’s freelance portfolio helped him land a part-time job at Dealer.com, developing the web applications used by car dealers to manage their businesses. Next fall, he heads to Lehigh University to study computer science.

Greg says the thing he likes most about his job at Dealer.com is talking to other developers; it’s the first time he’s worked with people who understand and share his passion. He also loves to see his programming put to use at dealerships across the country. In fact, he enjoys it so much that he works at Dealer after school and on breaks during what he calls his “Dealer-cations.”

He comes by his interest in technology genetically; his dad, David Potter, is the cofounder and former co-owner of South Burlington-based software company Data Innovations. David remembers how his own father pushed him toward semi-conductor engineering when he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. He doesn’t want to pressure Greg in the same way. That’s why he supports all of Greg’s computer projects, no matter what they are. He’s glad his son is experimenting before he goes off to school.

“The single thing I really try to hammer home with all the kids,” says David, “is to be passionate and happy about what you do. If you really love your work, whatever it is, you will find the success you need.”

GREG’S INSIGHTS:

Find problems and solve them. Greg says the problem-solving skills he used to write his lending library program are the ones he’s still using today. Tackling that project gave him a chance to experiment and figure out what worked and what didn’t. It was great training for what he’s doing now.

Hard work can be fun. ”Making money doing what I love is awesome,” he says.

Reinvest your profits. Greg spends the money he makes on things that will help make him more money, i.e. books, computer components and software.

Even if you have a job, you should still consider college. ”I want to study artificial intelligence and computing,” he explains. “I don’t know enough about that topic; it’s beyond what I’m doing now.”

Eli Hulse

Age: 14

Hometown: South Hero

School: Vermont Commons School

Business venture: Elis Studios — he creates iPhone apps.

Eli Hulse wasn’t always a techie kid. His parents, who are both doctors, homeschooled him until eighth grade. They shielded him from media and technology; the family didn’t get a television set until Eli was 10.

When he was 11, he started playing chess on his family’s desktop PC and wondered how the computer came up with the moves it used against him. “I thought that was, like, really cool,” he says. To satisfy his curiosity, he taught himself the Visual Basic language and wrote some primitive programs. He wanted his own computer, so that summer, he earned money to buy one by making bagels and selling them at the South Hero farmers market.

When Eli discovered the Apple App Store, he realized he could write programs for mobile devices, and get people to buy those instead. He bought a book, Starting an iPhone Application Business for Dummies, and got his parents to help him register Elis Studios with the App Store for $99. He launched his first app, a drawing application called Color Splasher, in 2010. He’s added four more since then.

Eli sells all of his apps for 99 cents each. He estimates he’s made about $250 so far — enough to pay the yearly fee to keep his products in the App Store. In the short term, he explains, he just wants to cover his costs; he sees his apps as an investment in his future. “I really hope it will help me when I’m trying to go to college,” he says.

His mom, Molly Rideout, speculates that being homeschooled gave Eli the flexibility to pursue his interests and brought him into contact with supportive adults who encouraged him. “He tends to get really intensely involved in certain things,” she observes. “It’s pretty impressive.”

ELI’S INSIGHTS:

Act the part. Eli’s email signature identifies him as the CEO of Elis Studios.

Keep your personal and business finances separate. Eli notes that if you mix profits with allowance or birthday money, you’ll never know how much you’re making.

Not moving enough units? Try a loss leader. In February, Eli released a free version of his Color Splasher app, to stimulate downloads. It’s working — more than 400 people have downloaded it since the beginning of February. He says he hopes it’ll draw attention to his other offerings: “They’ll say, ‘Oh look, there’s this other really cool app called iTap, and I could download that, too.’” Eli also makes money off of advertising that’s embedded in the free version.

Know your audience. Eli’s apps appeal to people like him — teenagers searching for stuff to do. His output consists of a doodling app, three games and Safety Light, which turns the iPhone into a beacon that flashes white and red; it’s designed to make bikers and skateboarders visible to cars in the dark. His next project? An app that can organize and save his friends’ one-liners in a database. “I don’t know if it’ll work or not,” he admits, “but that would be really fun.”

Adding It All Up

Want to start teaching your kids about money? Many public and private organizations offer free or low-cost classes and workshops. Here’s a short list to help you get started.

The Jump$tart Coalition
The Jump$tart Coalition is a national nonprofit devoted to improving kids’ personal financial literacy through advocacy, research and providing educational resources. The Vermont group maintains a local speakers bureau and holds an annual Common Sense Conference for educators. The 2012 conference took place in March.

The Vermont State Treasurer
The state treasurer’s office is a clearinghouse of financial literacy information. In addition to an annual poster contest for kids, which concluded in March, the office partners with the VT Jump$tart Coalition to conduct personal finance workshops for teachers. Here are three of the VST’s programs:

How to Raise a Money Smart Child — A Parent’s Guide: This booklet, created in partnership with the Vermont Jump$tart Coalition and People’s United Bank, is distributed by 57 schools throughout Vermont. There’s also a related series of free parent workshops, including one on April 3 in Barre.

Reading is an Investment: This program encourages students to read about financial literacy. The more titles they log, the more likely they are to win a $250 college savings account.

Vermont Reserve Cup: This annual game-show-style tournament encourages high school students to think about economics. This year’s event is May 4; teams must sign up by April 2.

Champlain College’s Center for Financial Literacy
This new partnership between Champlain College, National Life Group and several financial institutions advocates for more financial education opportunities at the local, state and national levels. It offers programs for Vermont students and adults, including a public policy summit, a summer teachers institute, and a credit score workshop for students.

CVOEO Growing Money Financial Education services
The Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity’s Financial Futures Program provides free education and training for low- to moderate-income Vermonters who need help organizing their finances or want to start a business. Free classes include:

Spend Smart: This three-session class is for people in households with limited income.

Keys to Credit: This two-session class goes into detail about the important and often confusing world of credit.

Creating a Financial Future: This two-session class covers IRA account basics, how to start building household savings, how to create an emergency fund, how to enhance your savings, and much more.

Vermont Higher Education Investment Plan
Administered by the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation, this site includes information about 529 college savings plans, a calculator to figure out how much you’ll need, webcasts, hotlines and other resources targeting people saving for college.

Vermont Bar Association
The association offers free legal and educational resources, including a publication that describes how to protect financial resources as you grow older: Taking Charge: Plan Now for Future Financial Control.

What stands between you and what you most desire?

Your answers might relate to a lack of money, time, support from family, or all of these. Obstacles can seem so numerous, so obvious, and so tough to change.

You can relate to obstacles in many ways. Typical responses are to explain them or resist them.

Both responses take a lot of time and energy. And both anchor you firmly in the past, keeping your focus on areas of your life that are not working.

To immediately generate alternatives, remember a simple analogy…

Imagine that you’re driving down a scenic highway. Suddenly you come to a huge rock in the middle of the road.

At this moment you have several options. You could try to explain how the rock ended up there. You could also go into resistance mode, complaining about the carelessness of highway construction or the lack of state funding for rock removal.

Or, you could bypass all this negativity and remove the obstacle from your life at once. Instead of explaining the rock or resisting it, just drive around it.

When faced with obstacles, people often respond with questions based on explanation and resistance, such as:

- Why am I so alone?
- Why does this always happen to me?
- Why am I such a failure?

However, you always have another option. You can ask questions that help you drive around any obstacle in your life.

Questions have uncanny power. Questions direct your attention— and along with it, how you think and how you feel. If you want to create different thoughts, feelings, and results into your life, then ask different questions.

Start now by skipping the why questions and begin asking what questions, such as:

1) What’s the lesson here?

There’s an old saying about learning from experience: Beware the person with twenty years of experience. This may consist of one year of learning and nineteen years of repetition.

The point is that experiences do not come prepackaged with empowering lessons. Everything hinges on how you interpret experiences, and your interpretations can change over the years. A single event can take you a step closer to emotional contraction or expansion. It all depends on how you interpret that event.

Psychologist Martin Seligman has made a career by studying how human beings interpret their experience. He notes that each of us has an explanatory style. People who chronically feel helpless tend to explain events in ways that are:

Permanent: “I always get confused when trying to learn something new.”

Personal: “I’m just no good at meeting people.”

Pervasive: “I’m just the kind of person who fails to follow through, no matter what kind of goals I set.”

Optimistic people use a different style. They explain events in ways that are:

Temporary: “When I feel confused, I ask questions that lead me to understanding.”

External: “I find it hard to talk to people in bars, so I invite them to quiet restaurants instead.”

Specific: “I find it challenging to meet long-term goals, so for now I will focus on achieving short-term objectives.”

You should interpret these obstacles as yield signs rather than stop signs.

These are signals that the world is expanding to accommodate your growth. Instead of resisting a challenge, just lean into it. Ask yourself: How can I interpret this event in a more powerful way? What’s a positive lesson that’s waiting here to be learned?

2) What’s great about having this problem?

There’s an easy answer to this question: “Nothing!” However, looking beyond that knee-jerk response can quickly open up your perspective.

Tony Robbins offers an example in his book Awakening the Giant Within. He recalls a time when he’d been on the road for nearly 100 days out of 120. Returning to his office, he found a stack of urgent memos and a list of 100 phone calls that he needed to personally return. Before making these discoveries, he was tired. Now he felt exhausted.

Tony managed to shift his internal state simply by asking: What’s great about having this problem? He then realized that just a few years ago he would have been grateful to get calls from twenty people—let alone one hundred people with national reputations.

This insight was enough to break his pattern of frustration. He found himself feeling grateful that so many people he loved and respected were willing to connect with him.

3) What’s my next action?

This question shines a spotlight on solutions. No matter what happens, you can choose what to say and do in response. Rather than manifesting resistance or explanation, you can choose your next action.
Successful people hold a bias for action. Add inspiration and intention to the mix, and you gain an unstoppable momentum.

They stole our secret.

This is the secret we had previously stolen from Europe. This secret is what powered our rise to become a superpower during the twentieth century.

But we have been without the formula this secret reveals for almost two decades now. We have seen, felt and experience the results of being without it.

We have also seen the results of those who stole it from us. Members of this secret society belong to China, India, Mexico, Japan and others.

They tried to bury it and hide it from us.

But I found it.

Many millenniums ago it was etched on a stone tablet. Since it has been passed down by an esoteric group of people. Less than 3% of those who have ever lived have learned of this secret. Even fewer have used its magic powers.

I have the tablet. I have the photo to prove it.

Do you want to see it?

Do you want the secret?

Are you sure?

If you learn of it and don’t use its formula, it could lead to a life of regret and despair.

In this case ignorance is bliss.

You could always excuse yourself by saying, “I just didn’t know the secret.”

But, if you want to know the secret… the secret to all success, in any aspect of life, the formula is etched on this stone table—click this link to discover The Secret (if you dare!)

Help reveal The Secret to everyone you know. Share on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, email, text, etc. America needs The Secret back. HURRY, we are running out of time!

Home-based businesses with a sole owner can only grow so much, right? Wrong.

With a little creativity you can keep expanding your home business, without hiring employees or renting an office. Here are seven tips for increasing revenue at your home business while keeping it a one-person show:

1. Use technology. From scheduling newsletters and social-media dispatches to issuing blog-post notifications via email, automate as much as possible. Collaboration tools such as Citrix Systems software can also help you readily pass off or work in the same document with colleagues and consultants without having to send giant email attachments or deal with a courier service. Additionally, video conferencing or call forwarding technology can do wonders for helping your little company appear much bigger — and more professional.

2. Outsource. These days, freelance marketplaces such as Elance and vWorker.com make it easy — and relatively inexpensive — to find contractors for a wide variety of roles, from accountants to virtual secretaries. There’s no law that says you have to make official, full-time hires to grow. Increasingly, I’m encountering high-revenue, fast-growing companies that have few, if any, official staffers and are driving growth entirely through contract labor.

3. Watch for opportunities. Entrepreneurs’ prime advantage over big companies is the ability to be nimble and shift gears quickly if a new opportunity emerges that might lead to more business. That’s what home-based franchisor Patricia Beckman did when she saw a need for a standardized virtual-assistant chain. Now her VA business, Cybertary, has 25 franchisees and is growing.

4. Treat your business like a business. Don’t neglect the back-office end of your business. For instance, consider using an online invoice system such as FreshBooks or Intuit’s Bill Manager. Being able to systematically track your payments and expenses will not only save you time, it’s also more professional in the eyes of customers or clients. Keep regular business hours so clients can rely on you.

5. Invest for growth. Yes, being home based can help reduce overhead, but you still need to put money into the business to keep it thriving. After all, you’ve got to spend money to make money, remember? And that’s true no matter where your business is based.

6. Don’t forget your plan. Know your goals for the business and keep your focus on the steps you need to take to achieve those goals. Beckman recommends keeping your business plan nearby and referring to it often. And as plans change, update it.

7. Get out there. Some solopreneurs use being home-based as an excuse to never meet with clients in person. That’s a mistake. Get out of that home-office cave — you can build stronger bonds with clients in face-to-face meetings. Attend networking events to keep growing your rolodex and gain exposure to new ideas.

How have you kept your home-based business growing? Leave a comment and tell us your strategy.

I do believe sometimes we have burdens to bear because we’re helping or demonstrating a lesson to others. But most of the time, our suffering is the result of our negative or dysfunctional thinking.

A negative or limiting belief, creates a negative or limiting vision, which inspires negative or limiting actions, which produce negative or limiting results.

As far as analytical equations go, it’s a pretty simple one. Alas, the human condition is slightly more complex. So how does self-sabotage actually play out?

There are a lot of possible causes:

Worthiness issues

Low self-esteem

Fear-based approach to life

Addictions

Self-hate

And it is this last one – self-hate – that offers some very revealing insights. It’s frequently the driver for some of the other causes on the list. And it’s always the most shocking scenario to those affected by it. Most people usually reject the possibility outright, in complete denial of the reality.

Let me give you some common examples I see regularly:

Gay or Lesbian people who are homophobic

Minorities who are racist against their own race

Rich people who despise people with money

So how could this possibly be, you wonder? How does it come about?

Let me know what you think below. Then on the next post, I’ll reveal what I have found, and give you some shocking examples that will astound you. So don’t miss the upcoming post. It’s about to get real hot in here!

But first, your turn…

Question of the Century: What’s the most important skill you must have in order to be successful as an entrepreneur, especially in an online business?

Is it salesmanship? Is it social media savvy, or SEO knowledge?

Is it writing and content marketing? (Because I know a great blog about that, you’re sort of reading it right now LOL.)

Or is it tech stuff, like the ability to set up and manage a functional website, capture leads, manage an email list, and so on? (Yeah, even though it’s my industry and what I do the most, I discover not to be the most important thing in business )

If you answered any of these, important as they might be, sorry, you’re wrong.

You don’t need to possess any of those skills, because you can outsource them, or you can go out and learn them anytime you want.

You can learn anything nowadays, usually for free. Want to learn how to field-strip an obscure Russian firearm that hasn’t been manufactured since 1927? I’ll bet someone has made a YouTube video showing you how.

All the knowledge in the world is literally at our fingertips. Yet only a handful of people break through from wanna-be-successes to true successes. So what’s missing?

What entrepreneurs need most isn’t knowledge. What they need is the ability to evolve and to adapt.

You must analyze and adapt

There’s a lot of talk in branding circles about how if you don’t keep doing what people have come to expect from you, you’re just confusing your audience. You’ve got to have a niche, and that niche has high, unclimbable walls around it. If you do something odd and out of character, or not in your currently accepted area of expertise, people won’t know what you stand for and hence won’t buy anything from you.

What terrible advice.

Even big companies that become dogmatic get slaughtered nowadays. Look at the music and film industries, and the crap they tried to hand us to protect themselves while their inflexible bulks drowned.

Now, look at the success stories.

While Borders bookstores were dying, Amazon led the e-book revolution with Kindle. They also went from selling books to selling everything under the sun, and started providing tech services like Amazon S3 media hosting.

Google entered a market that already had dominant search engines, like Yahoo and Lycos, but then branched from search into apps, smartphone operating systems, voice communications, mapping and navigation, commerce services, and just about everything else. And now who’s the household name?

Copyblogger started as a blog about copywriting. Then it became more about internet marketing and small business. Then it began creating products and merging with partners, now selling premium WordPress themes, content optimization, and landing page software.

At no point did Brian Clark say, “Woah, wait a minute… a blog that sells WordPress themes? That’ll confuse everyone” and ditch the whole thing to go back to only publishing posts about writing.

Mindlessly sticking to what used to work is overrated.

The evolution of a cocky badass young entrepreneur

If you’re thinking that you’re no Amazon, Google, or Copyblogger, then let me tell you my story as a one-person business that’s doing it.

Nobody knows how to describe me. This includes myself. People ask me what I do, and I never know what to tell them.

Well I mean I kind of did summarized it to a Serial Entrepreneur. Because I am, I love business and entrepreneurship, but I do have my areas of expertise and strength and focus. I had to literally drill myself down to failure in order to learn the lesson and learn to focus on one thing.

Here’s a brief outline of my journey so far:

Three years ago, I was going through my first LLC and Business matters.

Two and a half years ago, I did a ton of technology services, like blog setups.

Two years ago, I did even more and expanded tech services, but also had begun coaching. I wrote about business a lot and taught for free a lot.

A year ago, I still did some tech work, but was teaching and coaching more. I even decided to shut down my business and move to Chicago just to work for a business coaching and training company and run their young entrepreneur group.

Six months ago, I was already moving completely to Chicago where honestly it was priceless the things I learned there, but just this year I had some setbacks that made me decide to move back to California and rebuild my business and focus.

Now, as of two weeks ago, I’m officially back in my own and building the business that I decided to focus on. It took about 2 months to figure out what I really should do. So now I did and now I’m building and battling through obstacles and overcoming past-failure.

In the next few months, I’m going to start to produce more training videos and presentations, start live presentations of our business, focus more on acquiring clients for private coaching and business training services.

That’s a lot of change in three years, but I can tell you one thing for certain: if at any point in that chain I’d stuck to my guns and said, “I’m a young badass cocky entrepreneur,” or “I’m a tech guy” or “I’m a marketer” and refused to evolve and adapt, I’d be out of business today or more like out of any hope!.

Change your mind. Right now.

Sometimes people ask me why I talk so much about stuff that’s intangible, stuff that you might describe as “upping your mental game.” The reason is because it’s the only thing that makes a difference.

Meaning: You don’t need more knowledge, because you have access to more knowledge than you can handle, the internet is the answer, social media is the key and action is everything. Organized Knowledge is what you need. Here is a video about that.

What you need is the mindset to actually go out and use what you know.

You don’t need skills. You need organized-skills with a lot of ACTION.

You’ve got to learn to be uncertain and take risks. If you stay within what’s known and safe, you will never be truly successful. Doing what’s uncertain and risky isn’t easy, and that’s why the people who dare to do it are rewarded.

You’ve got to learn to lead, which simply means going out and doing things. If you do things instead of always thinking and talking about doing things, then congratulations, you’re a leader. Others will follow, but learn to follow as well.

You’ve got to learn to solve problems. I unschool my kids because I believe that children don’t need to memorize facts — especially in a world that changes this rapidly. They need to learn how to look at a situation, determine which resources they need, and then go find those resources in order to solve the problem. We must all learn to fish instead of relying on others giving us fish.

You’ve got to start believing you can do it. That sounds rah-rah, but it’s very important. We train ourselves into believing that we can do some things and can’t do others. Think you can’t do calculus? Wrong. You can’t levitate on Earth without assistance or superpowers. There’s a huge difference between those “can’ts.” (Other manifestations of this: “I’m not that kind of person,” “I wasn’t raised that way,” and “What will my parents/friends/neighbors/Twilight fan club think?”)

You’ve been a little bit brainwashed by the circumstances you’ve lived through. It’s okay, because we all have. But what you need to understand is that that cultural brainwashing puts you at a disadvantage as an entrepreneur.

It may sound trite to talk about upping your mental game … but if you don’t do exactly that, you’ll be stuck forever.

How to up your mental game

I wrote a post here about 10 Ways To Boost Your Energy & Business. READ IT!

My solution to addressing both kinds of rules is the same.

I am going to start holding training webinars for FREE – So Take Advantage of Me – Use Me!

Can’t make yourself do what needs to be done in your business? Are you afraid? Are you uncertain? Do you get stuck? Do you know everything you need to know — and know exactly what you need to do — but just … can’t … seem to … do it?

That happens because you’re believing lies that you’ve been told or have learned, and have internalized those lies as rules and limitations. But they’re not true.

When Your Attitude Is Right, Facts Don’t Count.

You need to listen and learn from people that been there, done that. Trust me, I learned that myself and everyone doesn’t practice what they preach. I only teach from experience, and I actually talk a lot about failure, how hard it is, and from personal examples. My expertise is entrepreneurship and business start-up from scratch and about obstacles and challenges. I speak the truth and keep it real. Once I’m a multi-millionaire, a billionaire, I will also teach that. So you can wait for that in a few years or join me in the journey and we can all make the millions together

There is an old maxim that says, “There are only so many hours in the day.”

While this is both figuratively and literally true, often how much you can do in those hours is limited not by the numbers on the clock, but by the energy you have during that time.

But while the benefits of having more energy are pretty easy to understand, it’s less clear how to become a more energetic person. While there’s no shortage of products, drinks and foods that promise you more vitality and less sluggishness throughout the day, many of the best tips are free, easy and relatively painless.

So, if you are looking for an easy to way to put more pep into your day, here are 10 practical tips to get you started.

1. Get a Good Night’s Rest

If you want more energy during the day, the best place to start is with the rest you get at night. Go to bed at a reasonable hour and get at least 7-9 hours of good sleep per night.

Being sleep deprived affects your body in a similar way to being drunk, hurting your ability to focus and complete tasks.

Getting more sleep, including taking a power nap in the afternoon if you feel inclined, will help you feel more alert and useful when you’re awake.

2. Don’t Skip Breakfast

It’s often said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and, if you want to have good energy levels throughout, the adage is certainly true.

Getting a good, healthy breakfast first thing in the morning gives your body a jolt of energy and sets the tone for the day.

However, this doesn’t mean that you can skip other meals either as its important to keep yourself well-fed if you want to keep moving. This is also why, sometimes, getting a healthy snack between meals can give you a boost of energy to get through the day.

3. Get Some Exercise

Though most people think of exercise as being something to tire them out, the truth is that the exhaustive effect of exercise is short lived. Once your body has recovered from the workout, it usually has more energy for the rest of the day.

In addition to the short-term energy gains, exercise helps you stay healthy, lose weight and be more active in general, all things that can help you increase your energy level long term.

However, if you can’t or don’t want to set aside time for exercise, find ways to get more movement in your day in general. Take the stairs at work or just walk around the block on your lunch break. Every little bit helps.

4. Drink More Water

Dehydration is a tricky problem to detect. It can often hide itself as hunger or mere fatigue.

Making sure you get plenty of water to drink can help your body function normally and help keep your energy levels high. Failure to do so can make you groggy and sleepy, even if you don’t necessarily feel thirsty.

How much water you need depends on you and your diet. Most people need to drink at least 8 8oz glasses of fluid (not necessarily just water) per day.

5. Eat More Healthy Foods

Cutting out junk foods, reducing salt, eating more fiber and getting more healthy protein can do wonders for your metabolism and your energy levels.

Heavier, fattier foods are tougher to digest and require more energy process. Likewise, salt can make you feel more bloated and sluggish.

Eating the right foods can help your body work better and more efficiently. This translates to more energy and less fatigue.

6. Use Caffeine Carefully

Caffeine can be a great boost if you start feeling sluggish, but use it carefully as becoming dependent on it can actually make you more sluggish in the long run.

Grabbing a coffee or a latte when you start to feel a bit slow can be fine, but keeping a steady stream in your system is going to lead a rush/crash cycle that hurts your energy levels.

Also, don’t drink caffeine too close to bedtime as it can interfere with your sleep and make things much worse the next day.

7. Shake Things Up

Sometimes we get fatigued because we’re stuck in a rut, doing the same things over and over again. This can take an emotional toll on us that also makes us physically tired.

Do something different, shake things up a bit. It can be something as simple to listening to new music, changing your appearance or trying out a new schedule.

Doing something different can make things seem fresh and new, that makes them exciting and that makes it easier to find the energy to do them.

8. Feed Your Mind

Your mind needs stimulation too and if it isn’t being challenged at least a little bit every day, it’s going to become bored and apathetic.

Challenge yourself every day, consider listening to interesting lectures (consider TED talks as a great place to start), read a book or do a crossword. Something to keep you mind engaged every day.

9. Learn to Relax

Stress is one of the leading causes of fatigue. Learning how to relax, turn off and do nothing is often crucial to keeping a healthy energy level all day.

Be sure to set aside a little bit of time each day for you to do nothing. This can be difficult if you are balancing work, family and other responsibilities, but just 30 minutes a day to meditate, take a bath, read a book and generally unwind can be a huge help.

Best of all, if you do this right before bed it can help get you ready to go to sleep and get that good night’s rest you need.

10. If You Must, See a Doctor

Finally, if taking the above steps don’t work and other lifestyle changes (including stopping smoking and cutting back on alcohol) don’t help improve your sagging energy levels, you may want to talk with a doctor.

Low energy levels can be a sign of many different ailments, including anemia, hormone imbalances and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

A doctor can look at your symptoms and test for various ailments that may cause them and suggest treatments for any problems you have.

However, for most people getting more energy and more out of their day is as simple as making a few lifestyle changes.

After all, for most people fatigue isn’t a sign of an illness, but a sign that we have gotten complacent with some bad habits. It’s easy to do and pretty much everyone falls into that trap at least once in a while.

The important thing is to catch it and correct the mistakes as soon as possible so you can continue living life to its fullest, with all of the energy you need to make it happen.
